Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) – Information Governance

The Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) is a widely recognized framework for managing electronic data during the discovery process in litigation or investigations. The Information Governance stage is the first stage in the EDRM, which involves creating policies and procedures for managing electronic information.

During this stage, organizations establish guidelines for the creation, retention, and disposition of electronic records. This includes identifying the types of data that need to be preserved, setting retention schedules, and implementing procedures for disposing of information that is no longer needed.

Information Governance also involves the implementation of systems and technologies for managing electronic records. This can include document management systems, email archiving solutions, and other tools that help to organize and preserve electronic information.

In addition to creating policies and implementing systems, the Information Governance stage also involves training employees on the proper handling of electronic records. This includes educating employees on how to classify records, how to store and retrieve records, and how to dispose of records when they are no longer needed.

By effectively managing electronic records, organizations can minimize the risk of data loss, reduce the costs associated with storing and managing electronic records, and ensure that they are in compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
